The Nanotechnology chapter is designed to provide some structure to this rapidly emerging field. Because of the meta-status of the term, nanotechnology is becoming an all-encompassing field. In reality, it is an enabling technology that provides a strong foundation to many industries or markets rather than a stand-alone industry of its own. Nanotechnology is new and attracting attention, a darling of Wall Street. The current overarching use of the term has created a two-fold problem for those who collect data on nanotechnology and its uses. The first challenge is the "problem of plenty". There is currently a plethora of data easily retrieved by the simplest data search engines (there will likely be well over 3 million hits on any search engine you choose by the time you read this document).
The second challenge is the "problem of time". The term Nanotechnology or Nano was simply not used by the early Nano systems firms. In this document we have developed a roadmap based on a clean dataset that makes a clearly defined objective decision to address the true enabling and emerging nanotechnology.
The Purpose of the MANCEF Atomically Precise Manufacturing (Nano) Roadmap
The purpose of the MANCEF’s Atomically Precise Manufacturing International Nano Roadmap (hereinafter also referred to as “Nano Roadmap”) is to assist in the commercial development of Nano based products and systems by providing all members in the Nanotechnology based value chain from supplier through manufacturer to the systems integrator a realistic assessment of Nano technology platforms and to provide a basis for the inclusion of Nanotechnology and in particular atomically precise manufacturing into the various stakeholders strategic plans. This Nano roadmap is designed to provide the reader with the commercial potential of the technology in a bounded commercial fashion.
This roadmap is developed by the MANCEF organization a “Triple Helix” organization with well over 1,000 members from industry, government and academia. There were over 70 professionals from all segments of the value chain that were key contributors to this document. The reality is that Nanotechnology based devices underlie system that can and do provide value to a variety of user needs. This roadmap is both that of an enabling and potentially disruptive technology base, as well as a sustaining technology base.
The authors of the Atomically Precise Nanotechnology roadmap have been involved in the successful, as well as unsuccessful task of bringing emerging enabling technology based solutions to market. They understand both the opportunity and the problems that “disruptive” technology based solutions, like portions of the Nanotechnology spectrum, represent. Further, they also recognize those Nanotechnologies which are enabling, as well as the firms that seek to develop their commercialize focus around them. Many are caused by High tech but are currently the dominant technology product platform and whose value is focused on making these platforms better, faster and cheaper. This book is designed to provide a realistic commercial view of Nanotechnology, and in particular Atomically Precise Manufacturing, that can assist the user in foraging through technology claims while at the same time providing a basis for road blocking the inertia that many emerging technologies including the disruptive segment of Nanotechnology face.
