The International Bio-Nano roadmap is the fifth generation of the MANCEF International Micro-Nano Roadmap series. It is an international effort with contributions from North America, Europe, Asia and South America. It distinguishes itself from other road mapping efforts in that it focuses on commercial drivers, and not research. These drivers illustrate the opportunities for nanotechnology in focused segments of the emerging bio market. It builds on, rather than disregards, the nearly 100 year history of technology and commercial roadmapping efforts. It integrates the long history of small technologies, and what we now call nanotechnology, into the bio-medical field.
The Bio-Nano roadmap provides some broad strokes of the future of nanotechnology in bio applications. It emphasizes the impact of nanotechnology on heath & safety regulation and policy. We demonstrate that the scope of nano bio, from bio-mimetics to bio-instrumentation, cannot be adequately covered in one document; rather it will take a series of road mapping efforts. Finally, we describe the leading commercial drivers in each segment of bio-medical, and focus on the technology & product opportunities. We also present a five stage timeline and model for successfully leveraging nanotechnology in these segments.
